Look it up in the Monster Manual and you’ll find it listed as a Type VI or Balor Demon, but we all know its true name — Balrog.

The Balor Demon, obviously ‘borrowed’ from Tolkien’s fiendish creation, stands twice the height of a man and wields a fiery vorpal sword and flaming whip.

Originally, they could shed darkness at will, radiate fear, detect, dispel, and read magic, and gate in lesser demons pretty much on a whim.

The Balor is the thing of nightmares, be it in Dungeons & Dragons or Middle Earth.

If I want to strike fear into the hearts of my players, introducing a Balor always does the trick.
