31 Days of D&D — Day 22

Day 22 — Favorite Dragon-Type?

Yeah, well, I must have a thing for the cold, because this guy goes hand in hand with yesterday’s favorite.

I suppose the popular answer for favorite dragon probably falls to the red. It is the iconic fire breathing big nasty after all, but the white dragon has always been the one that caught my eye, visually.

I am, admittedly, partial to winter climes and that probably weighs heavily in my preference here. It’s the frozen landscape that fires my imagination. The idea that one must also conquer the elements as well as whatever foul beastie makes its home there… and let’s face it, in a winter wonderland, the white dragon is at the top of the food chain.

A white dragon tends to make it into every campaign I run, often with a big personality and domain to call their own. Vyrmatrix III and Vyrmagoth both come to mind from more recent games.

Vyrmatrix I was where it all started for me — a white dragon worshiped by the Viking inspired inhabitants of Vyrmatrix Island. I had drawn a pretty elaborate world map on poster board back in the early 80s (wish I still had it) and tucked away in the North Sea was that tiny, frozen isle. When my players became shipwrecked there, well, let’s just say things took a nasty little turn for them.

The white dragon may not be the biggest or the baddest of the dragons, but one thing can be said without reservation, they are certainly the coolest.
