Day 12: What game is your group most likely to play next? Why?

Our group has been largely D&D focused pretty much from Day 1. Oh sure, we nibbled on lots of other games: Top Secret, Boot Hill, Car Wars, Star Fleet Battles, Traveller, Twilight 2000, a boatload of Avalon Hill war games, and both Marvel and DC Super Hero RPGs, to name but a handful… Be we have always come back to Dungeons and Dragons.

We went from Basic, to AD&D, to 3 and 3.5. I bought all the 4th edition stuff, but we never played it, preferring to stick with 3.5, but when 5th edition came along we jumped in head first and we’ve loved its streamlined play.

We are, however, nearing the end of our current campaign, so what we’ll be playing next is a fair question.

We have options.

First, I can assure you, we will be playing Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition. I’ve already been meticulously building the world for that next campaign.

But there are three other games on the horizon that will most likely see some play as well in 2017.

We invested in Robert E. Howard’s Conan: Adventures in an Age Undreamed Of kickstarter by Modiphius and I am confident I will be running a campaign in the Hyborian Age at some point.

I also signed up to playtest Modiphius’ Star Trek Adventures while at Gen Con. There is no doubt in my mind that we’ll be taking this game for a test run. Besides, it will give us an excuse to dust off Star Fleet Battles which I miss mightily.

The fourth game in the mix is my own creation, an Occult Detective RPG. It’s still very much in its infancy, despite working on it off and on for a decade… but I do look to begin playtesting again this year, in October, and to run periodic games, most likely at the quarters…

So, 2017 looks to be an exciting year for us, game-wise. But the answer as to which game we’ll be playing next is always D&D.
