In addition to my wife and I celebrating our 16th Wedding Anniversary, it being the Autumnal Equinox and the official start of Bobtober, the birthdays of such luminaries as Johnette Napolitano, Nick Cave, and Draco Malfoy himself — Tom Felton, it just so happens to be Hobbit Day.
In Tolkien’s beloved works, September 22 is the shared birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, hence the Hobbit Day designation. The entire week containing that date is celebrated as Tolkien Week.
I fell in love with Tolkien’s Ring works at a tender age. It was 1976… a momentous year for me, being 10 and all. I first read so many then. In addition to JRR Tolkien, it was the year I first discovered Robert E. Howard, Stephen King, Anne Rice, Mary Stewart, and James Blish’s Black Easter.
While this day my wife gets top priority and our betrothal the center of a day full of celebrations, I will always reflect fondly on this Day of Remembrances of Precious-bearing Hobbitses.
